Watch U.S. Open Tennis Matches in New York City

One of the biggest events taking place at the end of August is the U.S. Open, and even if you don’t have tickets to the tournament itself, there are still plenty of ways to soak up the atmosphere for free.

Before the main tournament begins, U.S. Open Fan Week takes place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens. Entry is completely free, giving you the chance to watch practice sessions, qualifying matches and explore the tournament grounds without buying a ticket.

If you’d rather stay in Manhattan or Brooklyn, several spots across the city also show the matches on big screens. Times Square regularly hosts free public screenings, whilst bars around Williamsburg often put on outdoor screenings during the biggest matches. Some popular places to keep on your radar include Taco Vista, The Williamsburg Hotel Bar and Syndicated Bar Theater Kitchen if you’re looking to watch with a crowd.

Coney Island Friday Night Fireworks

If you’re looking for something to do on a Friday evening, head down to Coney Island for one of New York’s longest-running summer traditions. Every Friday night throughout August, free fireworks light up the sky above the beach, making it the perfect excuse to spend an afternoon by the sea before ending the day with the show.

The fireworks start at 9:45pm and can be watched from the beach, the boardwalk or the amusement park, so there’s plenty of space to find a good viewing spot. I’d recommend arriving a little earlier to enjoy the atmosphere, grab a walk along the boardwalk or go on a few rides at Luna Park before the fireworks begin. The displays run every Friday until the end of August, with an additional show taking place over the Fourth of July weekend earlier in the summer.

Grand Bazaar NYC

Grand Bazaar NYC is one of the best weekend markets to visit if you enjoy independent shops, vintage finds, handmade products and local food. The market brings together hundreds of small businesses and artists selling clothing, homeware, artwork, jewellery and unique gifts.

The market takes place every Sunday on the Upper West Side and has both indoor and outdoor areas, which makes it a good option during August when temperatures can be high. I’d recommend going earlier in the day if you want the best choice of food as some popular vendors can sell out later in the afternoon.

The lawn opens from 5pm, with movies starting at 8pm, and people usually arrive early to choose their spot. Chairs, tables and large seating equipment are not allowed on the lawn, so a simple blanket is the best option.

Sky-High Yoga at Edge NYC

Central Park Row Boats

The boats are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so you can’t reserve a specific time in advance. During August weekends, I’d try to arrive earlier in the day as queues can build when the weather is warm. Each boat can hold up to four people and life jackets are provided.

It’s a good opportunity to book restaurants that might normally be outside your budget, including well-known New York dining spots, popular neighbourhood restaurants and some higher-end venues. The menus usually include set lunch and dinner options, so I’d recommend checking what’s included before booking as some restaurants offer better value than others.

Reservations can fill up quickly, especially for restaurants in popular areas like Midtown, SoHo and the West Village. If there’s somewhere you’ve wanted to try, I’d book early rather than waiting until you’re already in the city.

Evening games are a good option during August as temperatures are usually cooler compared to the middle of the day.

Best Pop-Ups & Festivals in New York this July

Capital One CityParks SummerStage

SummerStage is one of New York’s biggest outdoor concert and performance programmes, bringing live music, dance and cultural performances to parks across all five boroughs. The programme changes throughout August, with events taking place in different neighbourhoods. One of the highlights this month is GhanaFest-NY at Crotona Park in the Bronx, celebrating Ghanaian music and culture with performances from artists including Edem and DJ Andy Dosty.

There are also larger performances at Central Park’s Rumsey Playfield. Some events are free while others are benefit concerts with paid tickets, so I’d recommend checking the schedule before travelling across the city.

The Rooftop at Pier 17

The Sephora Summer Club at The William Vale is one of the biggest beauty-focused pop-ups happening in New York during summer. The rooftop pool at the Williamsburg hotel is transformed into a seasonal experience with beauty stations, product experiences, wellness activities and summer events.

You can also access beauty areas featuring Sephora products, enjoy poolside activities and take part in seasonal events running throughout the summer. Day passes are available even if you’re not staying at the hotel, making it possible to add this to your itinerary without booking accommodation there.
