Best Things To Do in New York in May 2026

New York in May is genuinely one of the best months to visit New York City. The weather has finally figured itself out (think 18-22°C,) the summer crowds haven’t arrived yet and the city goes into full bloom mode with outdoor markets, free festivals and events you can only catch once a year.

I’ve gone through everything happening in NYC this May, including the paid experiences worth booking in advance and the free events worth planning your days around. Here’s my guide on the best things to do in New York in May 2026.

New York Essentials

Best Paid Things to do in New York in May

Yoga in the Sky at One World Observatory

Yoga in the Sky at One World Observatory

This is one of those New York experiences that genuinely sounds more gimmicky than it is. A one hour yoga class held 102 storeys above the city, led by Ryan Beck who was a former professional dancer that performed with Beyoncé and the Black Eyed Peas. It’s accessible for all levels, mats are provided and tickets include access to floors 100 and 101 of the observatory afterwards for uninterrupted panoramic views.

There’s also a $10 food and drink credit to use at the observatory bar or restaurant after class, which makes the post-yoga reward feel very well earned. Sessions run at multiple times throughout the day, so you can time it for sunrise, a mid-morning session or late afternoon before sunset. If you’re someone who does yoga even occasionally and you’re visiting NYC in spring, this is worth building your day around.

Price: from $48 a person
Location: One World Observatory, 117 West St, New York, NY 10007
Dates: 11th April – 28th June 2026

On Fridays and Saturdays they have live Latin reggaeton DJs, the food menu includes oysters, tacos, truffle fries, coconut shrimp and burgers, and the East River views of the Brooklyn skyline are breathtaking!!

Guardian Rooftop at the W Hotel

Guardian Rooftop at the W Hotel

The newest rooftop in Union Square, Guardian immediately stands out with its 22 storey views over Manhattan. It feels like a hidden gem in the heart of the city, with an indoor-outdoor layout and a flexible glass roof that works rain or shine. The sunset views looking west are amazing, making it one of the best spots in NYC to catch golden hour. I’d recommend booking a table, especially on Fridays and Saturdays, as walk in availability in May can be unpredictable with the start of rooftop season.

Artishouse Matchbook Shadowbox Workshop

Artishouse Matchbook Shadowbox Workshop

If you’re looking for something a bit different from the standard NYC itinerary, this is it. The instructors guide you on composition, layering and storytelling throughout, so you don’t need any artistic experience to end up with something you’re actually proud of.

The result is a genuinely unique handmade souvenir that will look far better on your shelf than anything from a gift shop. It’s also a great option for a rainy afternoon or a morning when you want something relaxed and creative before hitting the streets again. No experience required, suitable for all ages and multiple time slots available throughout May.

Central Park Row Boats

Central Park Boats

One of the most classic New York experiences is rowing a boat on the Lake in Central Park. The Central Park Boathouse reopens for the 2026 season on 3rd April, and boats are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so getting there early is key if you want to avoid waiting. The rowboats operate generally from 10am until 7pm, weather permitting. Once you’re out on the water, you’ll see Central Park from a unique perspective with views of the Bow Bridge, the Lake, Belvedere Castle and even the Manhattan skyline in the distance. This is such a peaceful way to spend part of your morning or afternoon, although your arms might be a little sore after. Also don’t forget to bring a water bottle, a light jacket and your camera for the perfect spring photos.

Baseball is iconic New York experience and catching the Yankees at Yankee Stadium gives you a feel for local sports culture, with live commentary and classic ballpark food. There’s also live performances and arts and crafts stalls, giving the festival a truly city wide feel. My favourite travel tip

Japan Parade and Street Fair

Japan Parade and Street Fair

One of Manhattan’s most vibrant cultural parades, the Japan Parade brings traditional and contemporary Japanese culture to the Upper West Side for a full day of performances, street food, crafts and community events. The parade runs along Central Park West and the accompanying street fair on 72nd Street features food stalls, calligraphy workshops, origami demos, martial arts performances and music.

It’s family friendly, free and one of those New York days where you wander in planning to spend an hour and end up staying for three. I’d combine this with a walk through Central Park afterwards as it’s so close by!

Park Avenue Day

Park Avenue transforms into a pedestrian friendly festival for the day, closing off traffic and opening the street to over 200 vendors. You’ll find everything from art, fashion, food and local makers line the avenue, with live entertainment adding to the atmosphere. NYCxDesign

NYCxDesign is the city’s annual celebration of design, architecture, art, fashion and technology. You’ll find galleries, studios, showrooms and cultural spaces across Manhattan and Brooklyn open their doors for exhibitions, installations, talks and trade shows. Neighbourhood pop-ups and smaller events are often free, making it easy to drop in even if you’re short on time. The festival tends to cluster around SoHo, the Meatpacking District and Dumbo. The festival changes slightly each year, so checking the official program is worth it before heading out.

Best Free Things to do in New York this April

Memorial Day Parade

If you’re in New York over the Memorial Day weekend, the parades on 25th May are worth seeing. The Little Neck–Douglaston parade in Queens is America’s oldest and largest continuous Memorial Day parade. In Manhattan and Brooklyn, smaller local parades run through neighbourhoods with marching bands and veteran groups. If you’re in New York during this it’s a great chance to see a slice of American civic life that you won’t find on a regular weekend visit.

Popular Attractions in New York

Free Shakespeare in the Park

Free Shakespeare in the Park

The Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park is one of the most loved New York traditions, professional productions of Shakespeare performed outdoors in Central Park, with tickets always free. However getting them requires some planning as tickets are distributed via a lottery on the TodayTix app, or you can turn up to the Delacorte Theater on the day for in person distribution (arrive early).

It’s defiantly worth the effort as the combination of a stage production, the Central Park setting and the open air atmosphere in late May makes this one of the best evenings you can have in New York.

Price: free (tickets required via lottery or in person distribution)
Location: Delacorte Theater, Central Park
Dates: 22nd May – 28th June 2026

Manhattanhenge

Manhattanhenge

This is the one. Twice a year, the setting sun aligns perfectly with the east west street grid of Manhattan, flooding the entire length of each block with golden light. The result looks surreal from street level which looks like a wall of fire at the end of every avenue, framed by skyscrapers on both sides.

The 29th May full sun is the more spectacular of the two as the entire disc of the sun sits on the horizon rather than half of it. I’d recommend getting to your chosen street by 7:45pm to find a good spot, because you will not be the only person with this idea. 34th Street and 42nd Street tend to get the most people, whereas 14th Street is easier to position yourself on with more room to move. This is an unmissable event if you’re in New York at the end of May and I would recommend planning your night of the trip around it.

Price: free
Location: 14th, 23rd, 34th, 42nd, and 57th Streets (midtown, looking west)
Dates: 28th-29th May

The Bryant Park walking tour is a 45 minute experience exploring the park’s transformation from a neglected space to Manhattan’s “town square.” Tours cover the park’s history, design, amenities and maintenance.
