Best Free Things to do in New York this April

Easter Parade and Easter Bonnet Festival

The Easter Parade is unlike a typical parade. Instead of floats, people wear elaborate bonnets and themed costumes while walking along Fifth Avenue, creating a moving display of fashion and creativity. This tradition stretches back to the 1870s and is a rare opportunity to see New Yorkers and visitors fully embrace a springtime celebration. You can watch from near St Patrick’s Cathedral for a central view or wander along the parade yourself, joining in the fun with a decorated hat if you’re feeling inspired.

Free Cherry Blossom Spots in April

Central Park Cherry Blossom

April is peak cherry blossom season in New York and there are plenty of free places to enjoy the blooms without paying for a ticket. One of the best ways to see them is from the water, I would suggest taking the Staten Island Ferry or East River Ferry for scenic views of the city skyline with cherry trees along the waterfront. Other popular areas include Brooklyn Bridge Park, Governor’s Island and the East River Esplanade, all of which have clusters of cherry trees perfect for walking, picnicking or snapping photos. You’ll also catch views of bridges and the skyline as a stunning backdrop, making these spots both accessible and highly Instagrammable.
