Best Things To Do In New York In Summer 2026 – Events, Festivals, Free Activities & Outdoor Movies
If you’re planning a trip to New York between June and September, you’re in for a completely different experience compared to visiting during winter. Summer in New York is when I feel the city really comes alive. Rooftop bars are packed, outdoor movie nights return across the city, free festivals take over parks and waterfronts, and there are endless summer events happening almost every day of the week.
I’ve visited New York multiple times and summer is honestly one of my favourite times to experience the city. The days are longer, there are far more free things to do in New York and it feels like everyone is spending time outside making the most of the weather.
Whether you’re planning your first trip or returning to the city, this guide covers the best things to do in New York in summer 2026, including free events, outdoor movie nights, pop-ups and unique summer activities you won’t want to miss.

Best Free Things To Do In New York This Summer
Free Kayaking On The East River
One of the most unique free things to do in New York this summer is free kayaking on the East River. The Downtown Boathouse runs complimentary kayaking sessions throughout the summer months, allowing visitors to paddle along the waterfront whilst enjoying incredible views of the Manhattan skyline, Brooklyn Bridge and Lower Manhattan. It’s one of those experiences that feels like it should cost money but is completely free. Sessions do book up quickly during peak summer so I’d recommend reserving your spot in advance.

Manhattanhenge

Manhattanhenge happens twice a year and the summer dates fall in July. It is the moment when the setting sun lines up perfectly with the east to west streets in Manhattan, framed on both sides by skyscrapers. There is a full sun version where the entire sun sits on the horizon and a half sun version the following evening where only half of it is visible.
To get the best view you want to be as far east as possible while still looking west, so the most popular streets are 14th Street, 23rd Street, 34th Street and 42nd Street. 34th Street is especially good if you want the Empire State Building in your shot and 42nd Street gives you the Chrysler Building and Grand Central in the background.
Price – free
Location – best viewed from 14th, 23rd, 34th or 42nd Street
Dates – full sun on Saturday 11th July at 8:20pm, half sun on Sunday 12th July at 8:21pm
Free Public Tours of the David N. Dinkins Municipal Building
One of the newest free attractions in New York launching this June is the public rooftop tours at the David N. Dinkins Municipal Building, and I think this could become one of the hardest free tickets to get in the city. The tours give visitors access to the building’s rooftop and cupola, with panoramic views across Lower Manhattan, the Brooklyn Bridge and Downtown New York. Group sizes are capped at just six people which means the experience will feel much quieter and less crowded than places like Summit or Edge.
The tours need to be booked in advance through the DCAS online portal and I would expect reservations to disappear almost instantly once dates are released. If you are visiting New York and want skyline views without paying over $40 for an observation deck, this is definitely worth trying to book.

Location -1 Centre Street, Lower Manhattan
Dates – launching June 2026
CityPickle at Hudson Yards

CityPickle is bringing free pickleball courts to Hudson Yards all summer and it has already become one of the busiest outdoor activities in the area. The courts are located directly beside The Vessel and are free to use with advance reservations opening one week beforehand. Pickleball has become huge recently and this is such a fun way to spend an afternoon if you want something more active during your trip. The courts are designed for all skill levels so you definitely do not need to be good at the sport to join in.
Price – free
Location – Hudson Yards, beside The Vessel
Dates – 1st June 2026 to 30th August 2026
Time – 12pm to 7pm daily
Bryant Park Picnic Performances

Throughout summer, Bryant Park transforms into an outdoor performance space right in the middle of Midtown Manhattan with free live music, theatre, dance, opera and orchestral performances taking place several nights a week. The programme changes constantly throughout the season which means there is usually something different happening every week. One evening could be live jazz or a full orchestra performance and another could be contemporary dance or an outdoor theatre production. You also do not need tickets, which makes it one of the easiest free summer activities in Manhattan.

Location – Bryant Park, Midtown Manhattan
Dates – 28th May 2026 to 11th September 2026
Popular Attractions in New York
The Big Screen Schedule at Backyard at Hudson Yards

Hudson Yards’ Public Square and Gardens has a 30 foot Big Screen running throughout summer showing major international sporting events including Tennis Grand Slams, Golf Majors, Basketball and Hockey Playoffs and premier cycling races. It’s a really good option if you want to catch a major sporting event while still being out and social rather than stuck in a bar. Screenings are free and seating is first come first served, though Wells Fargo customers get priority seating if that applies to you.

Location – Public Square and Gardens, Hudson Yards
Dates – 1st May 2026 to 31st October 2026

FIFA World Cup Fan Zone at Brooklyn Bridge Park

With the FIFA World Cup happening this summer, New York is turning Brooklyn Bridge Park into one huge fan zone running from June into July and this looks like it is going to be one of the busiest places in the city all summer. The event includes giant match screenings, live DJs, concerts, football tournaments, food stands and outdoor seating areas directly beside the waterfront. The location alone makes this worth visiting because you have got the Manhattan skyline right behind you while watching the games.
Even if you do not care about football I still think this would be such a fun atmosphere to experience because everyone will be outside all day and night during the tournament. The fan zone is open daily and there will also be live music performances and activities happening between matches throughout the day. If you are visiting New York during the World Cup definitely expect this area to be extremely busy especially during major matches.

Location – Brooklyn Bridge Park
Dates – 13th June 2026 to 19th July 2026
Time – 12pm to 10pm daily
NYNJ World Cup 26 and Telemundo Fan Village at Rockefeller Center

In celebration of the FIFA World Cup, the NYNJ Host Committee along with Telemundo and Rockefeller Center are hosting the official Fan Village right in the heart of Midtown. The Rink at Rockefeller Center transforms into a dynamic soccer pitch where fans can gather for live match broadcasts on large screens, surrounded by the usual energy of Rockefeller Center.
This is a brilliant option if you want to feel part of the World Cup buzz but want to stay central rather than travelling out to Brooklyn. With Rockefeller Center already being one of the busiest spots in Manhattan during summer, this adds even more reason to visit during the tournament window.

Location – Rockefeller Center, Midtown Manhattan
Dates – 6th July 2026 to 19th July 2026
World Cup Final Watch Party in Central Park

This is one of the biggest single events happening in New York all summer. On Sunday 19th July, Central Park’s Great Lawn becomes one of the largest FIFA World Cup Final watch parties on the planet with space for around 50,000 people. Doors open at midday and the final kicks off at 3pm.
Tickets are free but they are distributed through a lottery system run by Global Citizen, so you need to register in advance rather than just turning up. If you manage to get tickets this is genuinely a once in a lifetime way to watch a World Cup final.
Price – free, registration required
Location – Great Lawn, Central Park
Date – Sunday 19th July 2026
Time – doors open at 12pm, final kicks off at 3pm
Citi Concert Series on TODAY
Citi Concert Series on TODAY is one of the most stacked free concert series happening in the city this summer and it runs right through from May to the end of September at Rockefeller Center. The lineup this year includes Zara Larsson, Charlie Puth, Lizzo, Niall Horan, Tyla, Mumford & Sons and Shaboozey among others.
A lot of the bigger names need a Fan Pass to get access closer to the stage so I would recommend requesting one in advance if there is an artist you really want to see. Even without a Fan Pass it is worth heading down early since the plaza fills up fast on the bigger weeks.
Price – free, Fan Pass recommended for priority access
Location – Rockefeller Plaza, Midtown Manhattan
Dates – May 2026 to September 2026
Selected lineup:
- 5th June – Lizzo
- 12th June – Niall Horan
- 26th June – Melanie Martinez
- 3rd July – Maren Morris
- 10th July – Megan Moroney
- 24th July – Tyla
- 29th July – Mumford & Sons
- 31st July – Shaboozey
Carnegie Hall Citywide

Carnegie Hall Citywide is brilliant if you want free live music away from the more obvious tourist spots. Carnegie Hall partners with community organisations across the city to put on free concerts in parks and public spaces, with performances ranging from jazz to orchestral to Afro Latin music. A lot of these take place at Bryant Park and Madison Square Park which makes them easy to combine with a day already spent in those areas.

Location – various, including Bryant Park and Madison Square Park
Dates – throughout June and July 2026
Selected dates:
- 25th June, 7pm – TONEWALL at Wave Hill

Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks

If you’re visiting New York around Independence Day this is one of the biggest events of the summer, and 2026 makes it even bigger since it marks both the 50th anniversary of the Macy’s fireworks and America’s 250th birthday. Fireworks will be launched from the Brooklyn Bridge, the Lower East River and the Lower Hudson River, which means there will be display points across multiple parts of the city rather than just one location.
Because of the scale this year I would expect waterfront spots in Brooklyn and along the Hudson to get busy early, so if you want a good view it is worth scouting your spot a few hours ahead.

Ben & Jerry’s Great Summer Bar Drop

This one is a bit different to everything else on this list and is fun if you happen to be in the right place at the right time. Ben & Jerry’s are running roaming pop up events around the city with free ice cream bar giveaways, roller skaters, games and something called the Hunt for the Golden Stick-et, where five golden sticks are hidden around each location for a chance to win a year of free ice cream bars. It’s not ticketed so you can just turn up if you are nearby, the New York dates land in late August across a few different locations.

Location – McCarren Park, Brooklyn Bridge Park and Coney Island Boardwalk

Best Outdoor Movie Nights in New York This Summer

New York has one of the best free outdoor movie scenes of any city in summer, with screenings running in pretty much every borough from May through September. A few highlights include Bryant Park’s Paramount+ Movie Nights behind the New York Public Library, Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Movies With a View at Pier 1 with the Manhattan skyline right behind the screen, and Central Park’s Movie Nights on the Overlook at Wollman Rink.
There are also smaller, less crowded options if you want something quieter, including the Roosevelt Island Summer Movie Series and screenings at the Oculus at the World Trade Center. I have written a full guide covering every outdoor movie series happening this summer including the complete film lineups and exact dates, so read it here if you want all the details.
