Quick Verdict: Would I Stay at Hotel Hendricks Again?

Hotel Hendricks is best for couples, girls trips and families who want a central New York hotel with good transport links and some great city views.

For me, the standout was definitely the Empire State View Queen room. Having the Empire State Building right outside the window made the stay feel much more special, and I also loved having access to Daintree, the hotel’s rooftop on the 29th floor.

The location is really good if it’s your first time in New York because you’re close to Bryant Park, Times Square and the subway, meaning you can get around the city easily without spending loads of time travelling between attractions.

Would I stay again? Yes, I would.

There are a few things I’d change, particularly when it comes to storage and the size of the beds, but overall I really enjoyed my stay and I think the location and views make Hotel Hendricks worth considering.

The room I Booked at Hotel Hendricks

I stayed in the Empire State View Queen room, which I chose because I wanted to have a view of the Empire State Building during my stay. And this was definitely the standout. Having the Empire State Building right outside the window was such a nice part of waking up in New York, and if you’re going to book this particular room category, I’d say the view is the main reason to do it.

One thing worth knowing, though, is that you do have to lean into the window slightly to see the full Empire State Building. The view is still really good, but I think it’s worth mentioning because the Empire State Building view is such a big selling point of the room.

The room itself was on the smaller side, which isn’t particularly unusual for New York. If you’ve stayed in NYC before, you’ll know that hotel rooms can be quite compact, especially when you’re looking at hotels in central Manhattan. The storage could definitely have been better and I think the room could make smarter use of the space. If you’re travelling with large suitcases, I’d keep this in mind when booking, particularly if you’re sharing the room with three or four people.

One thing I really liked, though, was the bathroom. The bathroom was separate from the bedroom and, unlike some smaller New York hotel rooms I’ve stayed in, the sink was actually inside the bathroom rather than being positioned in the bedroom. The bathroom itself was also really modern, and I loved the aesthetic. It’s actually very similar to the kind of bathroom style I’d love to have in my own home one day, so I was definitely paying attention to the design!

Another small detail I appreciated was that the shower had separate bottles of shampoo, conditioner and body wash rather than having one combined hair and body wash. It sounds like a small thing, but I always prefer having the three products separately.

The beds were technically queen beds, although for some reason they felt much more like a double to me. This wasn’t a huge issue for me during my stay, but it’s something I’d keep in mind if you’re sharing the room.

Price and What I Paid at Hotel Hendricks

I paid £716 for 3 nights and 4 days at Hotel Hendricks, which worked out at approximately £238 per night. I stayed in September, so obviously hotel prices in New York can change significantly depending on the time of year, dates, room type and how far in advance you book.

I’d always recommend checking the total price rather than just looking at the advertised nightly rate, as New York hotels can have additional taxes and fees. One thing I liked about my booking was that I didn’t have to pay a destination fee when I arrived because this was already included in the total price I paid through Booking.com.

This is something I’d always check when comparing New York hotels, as a hotel that looks cheaper initially can sometimes work out more expensive once all of the additional fees are added. For the room I stayed in, I personally thought the view and location added a lot of value to the stay.

Location of Hotel Hendricks

One of the biggest reasons I’d recommend Hotel Hendricks, particularly for a first trip to New York, is the location. You’re only a few minutes from the subway, which makes getting around Manhattan much easier, and you’re also just minutes from Bryant Park and Times Square.

If you’ve never been to New York before, being this central can be really useful because you’re close to so many of the places you’ll probably already have on your itinerary. You can easily walk to Bryant Park, Times Square and plenty of other attractions, while the nearby subway gives you an easy way to reach other parts of Manhattan.

There are also plenty of places to eat nearby, including well-known spots like Shake Shack and Joe’s Pizza, as well as Chick-fil-A if you want something quick and familiar. You’ll also find a lot of tourist shops around the area, which can be handy if you’re looking for New York souvenirs or gifts to take home.

For me personally, this was the one downside to the location. Although I liked how convenient it was, it did feel quite touristy. There were lots of tourists and tourist shops nearby, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, particularly if this is your first visit, but I personally prefer areas that feel a little more residential and less focused on tourists.

For comparison, I also stayed in Chelsea during this trip and preferred the feel of that neighbourhood. So I’d say Hotel Hendricks is a great location for convenience, particularly for first-time visitors, but if you’re looking for a quieter or more local New York neighbourhood, this probably wouldn’t be my first choice.

What I Loved About Hotel Hendricks

There were quite a few things I really liked about my stay at Hotel Hendricks.

• The Empire State Building view: This was easily the highlight of my room and the main reason I’d consider booking the Empire State View room.
• Daintree rooftop: Having a rooftop in such a central Manhattan hotel is a huge bonus, especially when you can see so much of the New York skyline from the 29th floor.
• The bathroom: I loved the modern design and the fact that the sink was actually inside the bathroom.
• Separate shower products: I really appreciated having separate bottles for shampoo, conditioner and body wash.
• Free bottled water: There were two bottles of water waiting in the room when I arrived, which was a nice little touch.
• Central location: Being so close to the subway, Bryant Park and Times Square makes exploring New York really easy.
• The rooftop views: Even if you don’t book an Empire State View room, you can still get some great views of the building from Daintree.

What I’d Change About Hotel Hendricks

No hotel is perfect, and there were a few things I’d keep in mind before booking Hotel Hendricks.

The first is storage. The room is fairly compact and I think the hotel could make better use of the available space. I’d love to see things like more storage under the bed or additional pegs and hooks for hanging clothes. These little changes would make a big difference, particularly for anyone staying for several nights or travelling with larger suitcases.

The second is the bed size. Although the room had a queen bed, it felt more like a double to me. Again, this wasn’t a major problem during my stay, but it’s something I’d be aware of if you’re travelling as a couple or sharing a room.

The other thing to know is that if you’re booking the Empire State View room specifically for the view, you do have to lean towards the window to get the full view of the building. You can still see the Empire State Building from the room and I absolutely loved having the view, but I don’t want you to book expecting a completely unobstructed wall-to-wall view of the building.

And finally, my personal pet peeve: please just give me hand wash! The hotel had a soap bar rather than liquid hand wash, and I will always prefer having a bottle of hand wash next to the sink.

These are all relatively small things, though, and none of them stopped me from enjoying my stay.

Facilities at Hotel Hendricks

Daintree Rooftop

One of the best things about Hotel Hendricks is Daintree, the hotel’s rooftop on the 29th floor. The rooftop has 360° views across New York City, including another fantastic view of the Empire State Building.

There’s both an indoor and outdoor area, which I particularly liked because the outdoor space would be great during the summer when you actually want to sit outside and enjoy the views. For me, having a rooftop like this is a big bonus for a central New York hotel. Even if you don’t have a room with a great view, you’ve still got somewhere in the hotel where you can take in the skyline.

Gym at Hotel Hendricks

Hotel Hendricks also has a gym, which is useful if you want to keep up with your workouts during your trip. One small detail I liked was that there are water fountains where you can refill your water bottle, rather than having to keep buying bottled water while you’re working out.

Isla & Co

For food and drinks, the hotel is home to Isla & Co, an Australian-inspired all-day dining restaurant and bar located on the ground floor. It’s a convenient option if you want to grab something to eat or drink without having to leave the hotel, although one of the things I liked about the location was that you also have so many food options within walking distance.
