Best Things To Do in New York in July 2026

July is one of the best months to visit New York. The city is packed with outdoor movie nights, free concerts, rooftop pop-ups, baseball games, summer festivals and some of the biggest events of the year including the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks and FIFA World Cup celebrations.

The weather is usually warm with temperatures averaging between 25°C and 30°C which makes it the perfect time to explore the city on foot, spend time in Central Park and make the most of all the outdoor events happening across Manhattan and Brooklyn. This guide covers the best things to do in New York in July and what’s worth adding to your itinerary.

New York Essentials

Best Free Things to do in New York in July

Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks

Macy's Fourth of July Fireworks

If you’re visiting New York around Independence Day, this is easily one of the biggest events happening all year. The 2026 display is expected to be even bigger than usual as it marks both the 50th anniversary of the Macy’s Fireworks and America’s 250th birthday celebrations.

The fireworks will be launched from multiple locations including the Brooklyn Bridge, the Lower East River and the Lower Hudson River which means there will be viewing spots across several parts of the city rather than just one section of Manhattan.

If you’re hoping to get a good viewing spot, I would recommend arriving a few hours early as areas along the waterfront fill up quickly. Brooklyn Bridge Park, the Brooklyn Heights Promenade and sections of the Hudson River Greenway will likely be some of the most popular places to watch from.

My 3 Favourite Hotels in Manhattan

Manhattanhenge

Manhattanhenge

Manhattanhenge is one of those events that only happens twice a year and July is one of the opportunities to see it. The event happens when the setting sun aligns perfectly with Manhattan’s street grid, creating one of the most photographed moments in New York. You’ll see thousands of photographers, locals and tourists lining up across the city waiting for the sunset to appear between the skyscrapers.

Some of the best viewing locations include 14th Street, 23rd Street, 34th Street and 42nd Street. If you’re hoping to photograph the Empire State Building, 34th Street is one of the best places to stand. If you want the Chrysler Building in the background, 42nd Street tends to be the most popular choice. Because the event only lasts a few minutes, I would recommend arriving at least 30 to 45 minutes beforehand to find a good spot.

Dates: Full sun on Saturday 11th July at 8:20pm and half sun on Sunday 12th July at 8:21pm
Location: 14th Street, 23rd Street, 34th Street and 42nd Street

Free Kayaking at Brooklyn Bridge Park

Free Kayaking at Brooklyn Bridge Park
Free Kayaking at Brooklyn Bridge Park

Free kayaking at Brooklyn Bridge Park is still (in my opinion) one of the most underrated summer activities in New York. The sessions take place several times a week and allow visitors to kayak along a protected area of the East River with incredible views of Lower Manhattan, the Brooklyn Bridge and the New York skyline.

You don’t need any previous kayaking experience and all equipment is included, including your kayak, paddle and life jacket. The sessions usually last around 20 minutes which is enough time to enjoy the views and experience being out on the water without feeling rushed.

Reservations open two weeks before each session and they do get booked up quickly during summer, so I would recommend planning ahead if this is something you want to do during your trip.

Dates: 27th May – 26th September 2026
Location: Brooklyn Bridge Park

Popular Attractions in New York

Bryant Park Movie Nights

Bryant Park Paramount+ Movie Nights
Bryant Park Paramount+ Movie Nights

If you’re visiting New York during summer, watching a film outdoors in Bryant Park is something I would definitely add to your itinerary. The lawn opens from 5pm and people arrive early with picnic blankets, snacks and drinks to secure a good spot before the movie starts at 8pm. One thing to note is that chairs, tables, tarps and yoga mats are not permitted on the lawn, so keeping things simple with a blanket is the best option.

There’s also food vendors located around the park throughout the evening which makes it easy to grab dinner before the film begins. The atmosphere always feels busy without being overwhelming and the Midtown location means it’s easy to fit into a day of sightseeing.

Dates: 13th July – 14th September 2026
Time: Lawn opens at 5pm and films start at 8pm
Location: Bryant Park
Price: Free
July Film Schedule:
The Truman Show – 27th July
Wayne’s World – 13th July
Good Morning, Vietnam – 20th July

CityPickle at Hudson Yards

CityPickle at Hudson Yards

If you’ve spent any time on social media recently, you’ve probably noticed how popular pickleball has become and this summer you can play for free right in the middle of Manhattan. CityPickle is bringing free pickleball courts to Hudson Yards throughout July and August, located directly beside The Vessel. The courts are suitable for all skill levels, whether you’ve played before or you’re picking up a paddle for the first time.

Reservations open one week in advance and I would definitely recommend booking ahead if you’re visiting during a weekend as court times can disappear quickly. It’s also a fun way to break up a busy sightseeing day if you’ve spent most of your trip walking around Manhattan.

Dates: 1st July – 30th August 2026
Time: 12pm – 7pm daily
Location: Hudson Yards, beside The Vessel

Bryant Park Picnic Performances

bryant park picnic performances

Throughout summer, Bryant Park hosts one of the best free cultural programmes in New York with live music, theatre, dance, opera and orchestral performances taking place several times a week.

The programme changes throughout the season so there is usually something different happening each week. One evening could feature a full orchestra performance whilst another might focus on contemporary dance or live theatre. The performances take place outdoors and no tickets are required, making it one of the easiest ways to experience live entertainment in New York without spending anything.

If you’re already planning to visit Bryant Park during your trip, it’s worth checking the schedule before you go as there is a good chance a performance will be taking place during your visit.

Brooklyn Bridge Park Movies With A View

Brooklyn Bridge Park Movies With A View

Movies With A View returns to Brooklyn Bridge Park for another summer of free outdoor cinema with one of the best backdrops in New York.

The screenings take place directly beside the waterfront with incredible views of Lower Manhattan, the Brooklyn Bridge and the skyline lighting up behind the screen as the evening progresses. People usually arrive early with blankets and snacks to secure a spot before the film starts. It remains one of the most popular summer events in Brooklyn each year.

Intrepid Museum Movie Nights

Intrepid Museum Movie Nights

Watching a film beside an aircraft carrier probably isn’t something most people expect to do whilst visiting New York, which is exactly why Intrepid Museum Movie Nights are worth adding to your itinerary.

The screenings take place outdoors beside the historic aircraft carrier on the Hudson River and often feature films connected to aviation, military history or New York itself. This year’s programme includes films such as Top Gun and Independence Day which feel particularly fitting given the location.

Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis so arriving early is recommended, especially for the more popular screenings.

Dates: 22nd May – 28th August 2026
Time: Doors open 6pm, film starts 7pm
Location: Intrepid Museum, Pier 86

Central Park Movie Nights at Wollman Rink

Central Park Movie Nights at Wollman Rink

Outdoor movie nights always make their way onto New York summer bucket lists and the screenings at Wollman Rink are some of the most scenic in the city.

The films are shown on a large outdoor screen surrounded by Central Park with the Manhattan skyline visible in the background. Visitors typically bring blankets, snacks and drinks before settling in for the evening.

The July programme includes Hamilton and Wicked: For Good which are likely to be some of the busiest screenings of the season. If you’re planning to attend, arriving when the lawn opens will give you the best chance of securing a good viewing spot.

It’s a good option if you want to watch live sport outdoors whilst still exploring the city. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis, although Wells Fargo customers receive access to priority seating areas.

New York Yankees Baseball Game

New York Yankees Game

Watching a Yankees game is one of those classic New York experiences that I always recommend to first-time visitors. Even if you don’t follow baseball, the atmosphere inside Yankee Stadium is worth experiencing. The area around the stadium starts filling up hours before first pitch with fans heading to nearby bars and restaurants before the game begins. Once inside, you’ll find everything from giant hot dogs and chicken buckets to souvenir stands and merchandise stores spread throughout the stadium.

The Yankees have home games throughout July and August which makes it one of the easiest sporting events to fit into your itinerary. Ticket prices are also much more affordable than most people expect, especially if you’re happy sitting further back from the field.

Dates: Multiple home games throughout July 2026

The sessions are led by Equinox instructors and your ticket includes admission to Edge afterwards, allowing you to stay and enjoy the views once the class finishes.

Yoga mats are provided and the classes are suitable for all levels, so you don’t need to be an experienced yogi to take part.

Central Park Row Boats

Central Park Boats

Renting a row boat in Central Park is one of the most iconic summer activities in New York. The boats launch from the Loeb Boathouse area and take visitors out onto The Lake where you’ll pass Bow Bridge, Bethesda Terrace and some of the most recognisable parts of Central Park. It offers a completely different perspective of the park and is a nice way to slow down for an hour amongst the busy sightseeing schedule that most visitors have.

Boats are rented on a first-come, first-served basis and queues can become quite long during weekends, so visiting earlier in the day is usually your best option.

Dates: Daily throughout July 2026
Time: 10am–7pm
Location: Central Park Boathouse
Price: Around $25–$30 per hour

Best Pop-Ups & Festivals in New York this July

NYC Restaurant Week

If you’re visiting New York in July, Restaurant Week is one of the best ways to experience some of the city’s most popular restaurants without paying full menu prices. It takes place from 20th July to 16th August 2026, where hundreds of restaurants across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and beyond offer fixed-price lunch and dinner menus. Participating restaurants range from neighbourhood favourites to Michelin-starred spots and restaurants that are usually difficult to get reservations for.

Previous years have included restaurants such as Gramercy Tavern, Manhatta, The Smith, Balthazar and Catch NYC, so it’s worth keeping an eye on the official line-up once it’s announced.

Reservations open before the event begins and the most popular restaurants do book up quickly, especially for weekend dinner slots. If there’s somewhere you’ve always wanted to try, I’d recommend booking as soon as reservations become available.
