Halloween in New York City 2026: Best Events, Pop-Ups and Free Things to Do
If you’re visiting New York City in October, you’ll find plenty of Halloween events and seasonal activities happening across the city in the weeks leading up to 31st October. From the famous Greenwich Village Halloween Parade to pumpkin displays, spooky cocktail experiences and free outdoor events, there’s a lot to fit into your trip.
I’d recommend planning a few activities in advance if you’re visiting towards the end of the month, as some events have limited tickets and the most popular attractions can get busy. You don’t need to spend a fortune either, as some of the best Halloween displays and events are completely free to visit.
I’ve put together this guide to the best things to do in New York City at Halloween, with a mix of ticketed events, seasonal pop-ups, free activities and museums you can visit during your trip. I’ve included the dates, prices and locations to help you decide which ones are worth adding to your itinerary.

Halloween Events in New York City in October
Watch the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade
If you’re in New York City on Halloween night, I’d recommend heading to the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade. It’s one of the city’s best-known Halloween traditions, with thousands of people taking part in elaborate costumes, giant puppets and creative performances as the parade moves through Manhattan.
The 53rd Annual Village Halloween Parade takes place on Saturday, 31st October 2026, so you’ll need to be in the city on Halloween itself to see it. This year’s theme is “Body & Soul”, with a Firehorse puppet feature commissioned by Basil Twist and choreographed by Julie Atlas Muz. The parade travels north along Sixth Avenue, starting near Canal Street and finishing around 15th Street. You can watch from the pavement for free, which makes this a great option if you want to experience Halloween in New York without buying an event ticket.
Price: Free to watch from the pavement; free to march in costume, subject to parade rulesLocation: Sixth Avenue, Greenwich Village, Manhattan
Date: 31st October 2026
Time: 7pm–11pm

See the Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade
The Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade is worth adding to your itinerary if you love dogs or want to see something a little different during your trip. Now in its 36th year, the event brings together dogs dressed in Halloween costumes, with a costume contest and a festival area for visitors to explore. You’ll see everything from tiny dogs in superhero outfits to more elaborate costumes that have clearly taken a lot of planning. The 2026 parade takes place on Saturday, 17th October, and spectators are welcome to watch without registering in advance.
The parade travels south along Avenue B, between East 13th Street and East 7th Street near Tompkins Square Park. There’s also a public festival block on East 6th Street between Avenues B and C, with treats, photo opportunities and other activities. Registration for dogs taking part in the parade is already full, so if you’re visiting this year, plan to watch rather than bring your own dog into the procession.
Price: Free for spectators
Location: Avenue B and East 6th Street, East Village, Manhattan
Date: 17th October 2026
Time: Parade starts at 11am; festival block open 10am–4pm
Visit the 34-Foot Halloween Sculpture at Rockefeller Center
Rockefeller Center is known for its seasonal displays, but there’s a different kind of installation to see in New York this October. The public art exhibition Scary and the Dancers! by artist Kenny Scharf transforms the Rockefeller Center campus with colourful sculptures, murals and large-scale artwork. The main attraction is Scary, a 34-foot-tall inflatable sculpture in Center Plaza, surrounded by six colourful dancing figures inspired by air dancers. The wider exhibition also includes murals and sculptural installations inside several Rockefeller Center buildings, as well as more than 100 artist-designed flags displayed around the campus. The exhibition runs into November, so you don’t need to visit on Halloween itself to see it. If you’re planning to visit Top of the Rock as well, you could combine the two stops on the same day.
Price: Free
Location: Rockefeller Center, including Center Plaza and selected building interiors, Midtown Manhattan
Dates: 9th October–1st November 2026
Take a Ghostbusters Movie Locations Pedicab Tour

If you’re a fan of Ghostbusters, this private pedicab tour is a fun way to explore some of the New York locations featured in the film. One of the main stops is the famous Hook & Ladder Company 8 firehouse in Tribeca, which fans will recognise as the Ghostbusters headquarters. The tour also takes you past other filming locations, including the grand library associated with the film’s opening scene and the apartment building on Central Park West. You’ll also explore parts of Central Park connected to scenes from the movie, including the area where Louis Tully is chased. Travelling by pedicab means you can see several locations without having to walk between every stop, which could be useful if you’re fitting the tour into a busy sightseeing day. .
Price: From approximately £49 per person; check the live listing before booking
Location: Tribeca, Central Park and other Manhattan filming locations
Dates: Check availability for your travel dates
Pick Your Own Pumpkin at Pumpkin Point on Governors Island

Pumpkin Point is a great option if you want to spend some time outside the busiest parts of Manhattan during your Halloween trip. The annual fall festival returns to Governors Island on 24th and 25th October 2026, with thousands of pumpkins spread across the historic Nolan Park area. Visitors can choose a pumpkin to take home, with a limit of one free pumpkin per person in each household, so remember to bring a reusable bag.
There’s more to do than visit the pumpkin patch, as the programme also includes trick-or-treating, ghost tours, fall foliage walks, pumpkin painting and live folk music. You’ll also find seasonal food and drink from island vendors, although these purchases are separate from the free activities. Admission to Pumpkin Point is free, making it a good choice if you want a Halloween activity without paying for a ticketed attraction. You’ll need to factor in the ferry journey from Manhattan or Brooklyn, so check the sailing times and fares before setting off.
Price: Free entry and one free pumpkin per person; ferry fares may apply
Location: Nolan Park, Governors Island, New York
Dates: 24th–25th October 2026
Time: 10am–5pm

Celebrate Día de los Muertos at the New York Botanical Garden
If you’re looking for an autumn event that goes beyond traditional Halloween activities, I’d consider visiting the New York Botanical Garden for its Día de los Muertos celebrations. The Mexican holiday is observed to honour and remember loved ones who have died, and it has its own cultural traditions rather than being a Mexican version of Halloween.
The garden’s 2026 programme includes colourful seasonal displays and an ofrenda, or altar, at the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden. It’s an opportunity to learn more about the meaning of the celebration while exploring the garden’s outdoor spaces. It’s located in the Bronx, so remember to include travel time from Manhattan when planning your itinerary.
Price: Tickets from approximately $15; prices vary by date and ticket type
Location: New York Botanical Garden, Bronx, New York
Dates: 3rd October–2nd November 2026
Visit Halloween Harvest at Luna Park, Coney Island

Halloween Harvest brings seasonal decorations and Halloween activities to Luna Park in Coney Island. The event includes pumpkin displays, hay bales and themed areas, along with activities such as pumpkin decorating, trick-or-treating, face painting and seasonal entertainment on selected dates. It’s worth checking which activities are included in your ticket before visiting, as access to rides depends on the pass you choose.
If you want to enjoy the rides as well as the Halloween activities, compare the available ticket options so you know exactly what you’re paying for. I’d also keep in mind that Coney Island is some distance from Midtown, so it makes sense to plan this as a separate outing rather than a quick stop between Manhattan attractions. The event runs across several weeks, which gives you some flexibility if you’re visiting before Halloween weekend.
Price: From approximately $49.99; ticket inclusions vary
Location: Luna Park, Coney Island, Brooklyn
Dates: 18th September–1st November 2026
Halloween Pop-Ups in New York City in October
Try Frankenstein’s Mad Scientist Cocktail Lab

If you’re planning a Halloween night out with friends, Frankenstein’s Mad Scientist Cocktail Lab offers a themed drinks experience in Manhattan. The event turns the Rojo Room into a fictional laboratory, with spooky decorations, themed drinks and photo opportunities. General admission includes a 90 minute experience and one Halloween-themed cocktail or mocktail, so you can enjoy the event without committing to a full evening of activities. Additional interactive drinks are available to purchase, and there may also be an option to book an on-site tarot reading for an extra cost.
There’s a special Monster Mash Halloween Party on 31st October, which includes a themed drink and the chance to enter the costume contest. A four-for-three ticket promotion is also listed for selected Wednesday and Thursday time slots, although availability may be limited. The event is for guests aged 21 and over, so make sure everyone in your group meets the age requirement before booking.
Price: General admission from $20.35 including fees; Halloween party from $33.25 including fees
Location: Rojo Room, 446 West 14th Street, Manhattan
Dates: 24th September–31st October 2026
See the Pumpkin Arch at Pier 17
The Pumpkin Arch at Pier 17 is a seasonal display worth adding to your list if you’re looking for free Halloween photo spots in New York. The installation is made from hundreds of pumpkins and autumn foliage, forming an archway around 10 feet tall on the waterfront. The arch is scheduled to return on 22nd October and remain into November, giving you a chance to see it after the main Halloween weekend as well. The Seaport is also planning additional seasonal activities, so check the local programme for any events taking place during your visit. You don’t need to buy a ticket just to see the arch, which makes it an easy addition to a day exploring Lower Manhattan.
Price: Free
Location: Heineken Riverdeck, north side of Pier 17, 89 South Street, Manhattan
Dates: From 22nd October to 16th November 2026
Watch a Halloween Film at Rooftop Cinema Club

Rooftop Cinema Club is another option if you want to include a film night in your Halloween plans. Its Fright Club programme features seasonal screenings throughout October, including familiar Halloween films and horror classics. The Halloween Day line-up at the Midtown location is listed to include Halloweentown, Hocus Pocus, Practical Magic and Halloween (1978), giving you a mix of lighter seasonal films and something scarier later in the evening. Tickets start from around $12.50, although the price can vary by film and session. Remember that this is an outdoor rooftop cinema, so bring an extra layer for the evening and check the venue’s weather policy.
Price: From approximately $12.50 per ticket; check the live listing
Location: Rooftop Cinema Club Midtown, 60 West 37th Street, New York
Date: 31st October 2026 for the listed Halloween Day screenings; other screenings throughout October
My favourite travel tip

Free Things to Do in New York City at Halloween
See the Halloween Decorations on New York’s Brownstone Streets

You don’t need to book a Halloween attraction to see some impressive decorations in New York, as many of the best displays are outside people’s homes. The Upper East Side is one of the areas I’d recommend exploring if you want to see decorated brownstones, with some streets featuring pumpkins, skeletons, cobwebs and elaborate front stoops. East 76th Street between Madison Avenue and Fifth Avenue is one area to look at, alongside East 70th and East 71st Streets around Park Avenue and Lexington Avenue. East 82nd Street between Third Avenue and Park Avenue is another option, including the famously named “Upper East Died” stoop.
You’ll also find decorated homes around East 67th Street between Fifth Avenue and Madison Avenue, although the displays vary from year to year. Greenwich Village and the West Village are worth exploring too, with their historic streets and brownstone buildings providing plenty of opportunities for seasonal photos. I’d aim to visit in the second half of October, when many residents have finished putting up their decorations. Remember that these are private homes, so take photos from the pavement and avoid blocking entrances or disturbing residents.
Price: Free
Location: Upper East Side, particularly East 67th–82nd Streets; Greenwich Village and West Village
Dates: Throughout October, with many displays at their best in the second half of the month
Time: Daytime or early evening
Watch a Free Outdoor Film at Hudson Yards
Hudson Yards has hosted free outdoor movie nights as part of its seasonal programme, making it worth checking the schedule if you’re visiting New York in October. The screenings take place on the Big Screen in Public Square and Gardens, with the programme including films such as Chicago, Back to the Future, Wicked, Hairspray and Beetlejuice on selected Fridays.
The listed October dates include 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th October 2026, although you should confirm the current schedule before travelling across the city for a specific film. Admission is free, and seating is first come, first served, so I’d arrive early if there’s a particular screening you want to see. Bring an extra layer if you’re planning to stay for an evening film, as temperatures can drop outdoors in October.
Price: Free; food, drinks and nearby attractions cost extra
Location: Public Square and Gardens, Hudson Yards, Manhattan
Dates: Selected Fridays in October 2026; check the current programme
Time: Listed doors from 5pm, with films starting in the early evening
Pumpkin Smash at Hudson River Park
If you’re visiting New York in November and have a pumpkin left over from Halloween, Pumpkin Smash at Hudson River Park is a fun way to dispose of it sustainably. The event invites visitors to bring their own pumpkins and smash them into smaller pieces, which the park team will then compost and reuse to help nourish the park’s plants. You’ll get around 15 minutes to break up your pumpkin, with a choice of tools including a bat, hammer or shovel. It’s a hands-on activity and a little different from the usual sightseeing attractions you’ll find around Manhattan. After smashing your pumpkin, you can stay to learn more from the Hudson River Park team about how composting works and how the park repurposes seasonal waste. You’ll need to bring your own pumpkin, so keep that in mind if you’ve bought one during your trip.
Price: Free; bring your own pumpkin
Location: Pier 84, Hudson River Park, Manhattan
Date: Saturday, 7th November 2026
Time: 11am–3pm
