4 Day New York Itinerary: Exactly How I Would Spend 4 Days in NYC for a First Time Visit
If you’re planning your first trip and looking for the perfect 4 day New York itinerary, this is exactly how I would spend four days in the city. One thing I realised very quickly when planning my own trip is that New York can feel overwhelming if you try to do everything at once. The city is huge, every neighbourhood feels different and there are hundreds of places competing for your attention.
This itinerary is designed to help you see the main landmarks and includes a mix of iconic attractions, free things to do in New York, rooftop views and some of my favourite areas to walk around. I’ve also tried to group things together properly so you are not wasting time constantly travelling back and forth across Manhattan. Whether you’re visiting New York for the first time or trying to plan a realistic girls trip itinerary, this 4 day New York itinerary covers exactly what I would recommend doing.

Day 1 in New York: Brooklyn, Lower Manhattan & The Statue of Liberty

If you’re awake early because of jetlag, I would start your first morning in DUMBO, Brooklyn. This is one of the best places to catch sunrise in New York and the skyline views here are easily some of the best in the city. I would first head towards the Brooklyn Bridge lookout area where you get that iconic Manhattan skyline backdrop across the water. It feels much quieter earlier in the morning and you can actually take your time without crowds everywhere.
From there walk over to Squibb Park Bridge which opens at 8am. The views from here are completely different and you get a slightly elevated perspective looking back over Manhattan and the East River. Brooklyn Heights in general is one of my favourite areas to walk around because it feels much calmer compared to Midtown. After that you’re going to head down towards Pebble Beach and spend some time walking along the waterfront. You’ll also find Jane’s Carousel nearby which costs around $4 to ride and sits directly beside the bridge.
My 3 Favourite Hotels in Manhattan
Motto Hilton Chelsea ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Moxy NYC Chelsea ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Arlo Midtown ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Once you’re ready for breakfast, head over to Time Out Market which is only a couple of minutes away. I would recommend grabbing a bagel from Ess-a-Bagel and then heading up to the free rooftop inside the market afterwards. A lot of people miss this rooftop but the views are so good overlooking the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan skyline. If you need a coffee stop before continuing the day, Butler is right outside and works perfectly for a quick reset.
If walking the Brooklyn Bridge is high on your list, this is the time I would do it. I always recommend walking from Brooklyn into Manhattan because the skyline opens up in front of you the entire way. It also makes much more sense for photos rather than walking in the opposite direction.
Once you arrive in Manhattan, head down towards the 9/11 Memorial & Museum which is around a 12 minute walk away. I would strongly recommend booking tickets in advance because this is one of the busiest attractions in the city and you will probably spend a couple of hours here.
After visiting the museum, spend some time exploring Lower Manhattan. You can walk around Wall Street, see the New York Stock Exchange, stop at the Charging Bull and grab a slice from Joe’s Pizza. Everything here is very walkable so you can take your time exploring without needing transport.
Towards the late afternoon, I would head down to the Staten Island Ferry terminal. This is one of the best free things to do in New York because the ferry passes directly by the Statue of Liberty and gives you incredible skyline views from the water. Just note that the ferry does not stop at the statue itself. It takes around 25 minutes each way so I would allow around 90 minutes total.
If you still have energy left after a full first day, finish the evening at the Empire State Building. I would recommend booking tickets in advance especially if you want sunset or evening views because those time slots sell out quickly. Seeing Manhattan lit up at night after spending the day walking through the city feels completely different and well worth ticking off your bucket list.
TLDR – Day 1 in New York
- DUMBO
- Brooklyn Bridge
- Squibb Park Bridge
- Pebble Beach and Jane’s Carousel
- Time Out Market – don’t miss the rooftop
- Walk the Brooklyn Bridge back to Manhattan
- 9/11 Memorial & Museum
- Explore Lower Manhattan – Wall Street, New York Stock Exchange, Charging Bull
- Staten Island Ferry
- Empire State Building
Day 2 in New York: Midtown, Rooftops & Roosevelt Island

For day 2 of this 4 day New York itinerary, I would start early in Times Square. It gets busy very quickly during the day so mornings are the best time to actually take everything in properly before the crowds arrive.
From there, walk over to Bryant Park which feels completely different from Times Square despite being only a few minutes away. This is one of my favourite places in Midtown to sit for a bit and slow things down and right next door you also have the New York Public Library which is free to visit. Even if you only spend 15 minutes inside, the main reading hall is worth seeing.

A few minutes away is the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library which also has a free rooftop terrace overlooking Midtown Manhattan. After that, I would head to Summit One Vanderbilt. Out of all the observation decks in New York, this is one of my favourites because it feels much more immersive than a standard skyline viewpoint, however you do need to prebook tickets though because it gets very busy.

Once you finish there, walk over to Grand Central Terminal for a quick stop. Even if you’ve seen it in films before, it’s still worth seeing in person while you’re nearby. Then later in the afternoon, take the subway over to the Roosevelt Island Tramway. I would try to time this around sunset because the views over the East River are incredible once the city lights start turning on.

When you arrive on Roosevelt Island, you can either walk around or use the free red bus that loops around the island regularly. It’s a much quieter side of New York that a lot of visitors never end up seeing. To finish the evening, head back into Manhattan and go for dinner or drinks at Refinery Rooftop. The direct view of the Empire State Building from here at night is one of the best rooftop views in the city.
TLDR – Day 2 in New York
- Times Square
- Bryant Park
- New York Public Library
- Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library – visit the free rooftop
- Summit One Vanderbilt
- Grand Central Terminal
- Roosevelt Island Tramway
- Refinery Rooftop
Day 3 in New York: Central Park, Museums & Sunset Views
I would start day 3 with breakfast from Liberty Bagels on 5th Avenue and from there, walk over to The Plaza Hotel which is one of the most iconic hotels in New York City. Even if you’re not staying there, it’s still worth seeing the entrance and the surrounding area near Central Park South.

Next I would head to Unlimited Biking and rent bikes for the day. Central Park is huge and cycling around it makes seeing everything much easier than trying to walk the entire park. Inside Central Park, I would stop at The Mall, Bethesda Terrace, Bow Bridge and Belvedere Castle. These are some of the most recognisable areas in the park and they are all relatively easy to reach when cycling.
While exploring the park, I would also head towards The Metropolitan Museum of Art. You can leave your bike nearby and spend a few hours inside if you want to explore the collections properly. Again, I would recommend booking tickets in advance because queues can get long.
If you still have time afterwards, you can either continue over to the American Museum of Natural History or slow things down and spend some time relaxing around The Great Lawn.
Once you’re finished with the bike, head over towards Top of the Rock for sunset. I would strongly recommend prebooking this because sunset slots are some of the first tickets to sell out. To end the evening, I would book dinner at Monkey Bar which is known for its Wagyu cheeseburgers and truffle monkey bread.
TLDR – Day 3 in New York
- Liberty Bagels on 5th Avenue
- The Plaza Hotel
- Unlimited Biking for bike hire
- Central Park – The Mall, Bethesda Terrace, Bow Bridge and Belvedere Castle
- The Metropolitan Museum of Art
- American Museum of Natural History OR relax on The Great Lawn
- Top of the Rock for sunset
- Dinner at Monkey Bar
Day 4 in New York: West Village, Soho & Helicopter Views

Start your final morning in New York at Little Island which is one of my favourite free spots in Manhattan. It sits above the Hudson River and feels completely different from the rest of the city. From there, walk over to Pier 57 for breakfast and make sure you head up to the free rooftop afterwards because the downtown skyline views from here are incredible.
Popular Attractions in New York
Next you’re going to head over to Chelsea Market which is perfect for souvenirs, snacks or a quick lunch stop. I always recommend Los Tacos No.1 because it’s one of the best quick food spots in the area.
Once you’re done, walk across to the High Line and spend some time exploring before heading to your booking at The Edge. I would recommend booking an early afternoon slot so you still get good views without it cutting too far into the rest of your evening plans.
After that, take the subway down to Soho for shopping which is one my favourite areas to walk around because there is always something happening and everything is easy to explore on foot. While you’re there, you can also walk over to see The Friends Apartment Building and Carrie Bradshaw’s apartment, as both are nearby and easy to include while exploring Lower Manhattan.
Then head across to Washington Square Park which is another one of the best free things to do in New York. It’s a great place to sit for a bit and take in the atmosphere after a busy few days exploring the city.

And lastly to finish your trip, I would recommend booking a helicopter tour over NYC either at sunset or in the evening. Seeing the skyline from above gives you a completely different perspective of the city and it’s one of the most memorable ways to end a first trip to New York.
TLDR – Day 4 in New York
- Little Island
- Pier 57
- Chelsea Market
- High Line
- The Edge
- Soho
- See the Friends apartment building and Carrie Bradshaw’s apartment
- Washington Square Park
- Helicopter Tour
